King Henry VIII Grammar School - Middle Period

The School

Since 1542 this School has provided education facilities for pupils from the Abergavenny area. For several centuries King Henry VIII Grammar School was located in the old St. John's Church building, with often only a few dozen pupils.

It moved in 1898 to a purpose built (mainly by public subscription) building in Penypound with up to one hundred and thirty pupils.

Were you there?

The school transferred in 1962 to new buildings in Old Hereford Road and shortly afterwards became a full comprehensive, now known as King Henry VIII School.

There are currently some 1250 pupils in the school, and thousands of ex pupils. Are you one of them?

Throughout its life the school motto has been -

Ut Prosim - that we shall be of service

The Old Boys' Association

The Association was formed in 1925 to provide opportunities for reunions of pupils throughout their adult life. Many sports and social functions are arranged for all age groups. The Association also acts as a contact source for its members, enabling friends to keep in touch all over the United Kingdom and beyond.

We also support and advise individuals who would like to arrange their own school year reunion.
